#WPC11 Day 2 activities
I started out the day early going for a run with the famous Steve Chap
man. Let me correct that. The “Silver Bullet” Steve Chapman. Man can that guy fly. I was thinking that he’d take it easy on me especially when he took me on a route that was rather shady in downtown LA. When we started out he bolted out of the gates and I was gasping for breath trying to keep up. After about three minutes I pretty much just said “Please stop.” He returned over his shoulder “I’ll meet up with you when I come back, don’t get mugged too bad” I doggedly hurried up to follow at least within shouting distance in case Steve had to save me from a early morning mugger.
After about fifteen miles we eventually ended back at our hotel drenched in sweat and with a commitment never agree to run with him again. I’m not sure how anyone finds running fun. I like to do it just to say I’m a runner but deep down I’d rather be sleeping at five a.m. in the morning.
After getting everything settled at our booth last night we were able to enjoy the key note sessions today. It’s always pretty neat to see all the cool toys and innovative technologies Microsoft has at it’s disposal.
Steve Ballmer showed the Xbox voice activated functions coming. He also announced live TV coming to the Xbox. He spent quite a few minutes on the Dynamics product lines and stated for the last ten years the accounting and business application area has grown 20% year after year.
Once again Navision was stated as being the first ERP product to move to the cloud. I guess 2012 will be the big release target.
Tammi Reller presented the Windows portion of the program. Nice to see her still around. It seems like most of the old GP guys are gone.
Linda rose presented a session on our cloud offering which was attended by over 300 people. We had quite a bit of traffic coming by the booth to thank her for her presentation.
Long day at the booth today. We had an eight hour stretch of people coming by to pick up beach balls and visors. Lots of traffic from all over the world. There really wasn’t that many pure GP people coming around to see us. For some reason last year there seemed to be more Dynamics folks.
We have a myGPcloud booth for anyone that wants to offer a Dynamics hosted offering. A big release is our Spanish version of myGPcloud. It’s a great offering for our LATAM friends.
We have the incredibly knowledgeable Francisco Hillyer at our booth for all you LATAM people. He’s pretty much translated our whole myGPcloud site into a Spanish version.
Ended the night with a very nice outdoors party with the Yammer folks. It was right across the convention center and the venue was really great.
I better get to bed. I think Steve is going to drag me around early in the morning on a rickshaw or something so he has added resistance to his early morning routine.
Day 3 coming up.
At WPC with the gang
WPC is just starting today and I already feel like I’ve been here a week. Well, I actually have been in So.Cal. since Wednesday so it has been five days already. Since our main office is in San Diego I came down from the Great White North to rub shoulders with my fellow consultants and a few clients.
I hear there is over 15,000 people attending this years conference. Amazing really to have that many technology people together at one time. It’s a great time to learn, network and be inspired together.
We set up our booth today and got all of our swag ready. We are at booth #1150 if anyone wants some cool stuff. We have full size beach balls this year. My kids love hitting them around the house even if my wife doesn’t necessarily agree that’s the best use for them.
I’m looking forward to the keynotes especially. It’s always fun to listen to Steve Ballmer get excited and make snide comments about Apple. They also usually show off all the awesome things that are coming out in the future.
Tomorrow starts all the fun. I’ll keep everyone updated on the events and announcements here.
What goes around comes around with Dynamics GP
I was reading a blog by Kelsey Andrich over at I.B.I.S. I totally agree with her opinion on burning bridges.
Today I received a call from a long time client that moved over to Microsoft support for various reasons instead of using our support offering. I remember two or three years ago wishing the client the best of luck with Microsoft. Microsoft has good support and thought she’d be taken care of with them. Of course I told her they weren’t as good as me. Ha. But I really did hope things would go well for them.
After several years of using MBS support she has return to use our support offering. She apologized profusely for moving away from our support. Not because she had a bad experience with MBS but she thought I may be offended of the decision they made several years ago.
My immediate response was “I always want what’s best for the client. If that was the right business decision for you I’m glad you did it. No hard feeling. I’m glad we have the chance to support you again.”
I’m glad the client still felt she had a solid bridge to walk back to us on when the time was right.
Thanks for the reminder Kelsey.
Credit Card Batch Processing
If you need to quickly create credit card payments for a large batch of sales documents in Dynamics GP, take a look at the Credit Card Extension module from Azox.
A client recently was looking for a solution that could create invoices and credit card payments, and process the credit card payments with a minimal amount of manual attention. I proposed a solution including Integration Manager and the Azox Credit Card Extension.
I use Integration Manager to create the SOP invoices in GP from a source file from Salesforce.com
The Azox solution allows me to easily handle a large number of documents and monitor the authorization and settlement process for the credit card transactions. The approved credit card transactions show up as deposits on the SOP invoice screen.
I created this short video to show this in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5YODGYXPAU
Doug Pitcher’s OFFICIAL 100 most famous, awesome and totally influential Dynamics people for 2011
Once again I was snubbed on the 100 most influential list. I was so ticked. Maybe not as ticked as David Musgrave or Frank Hamelly but I certainly think the refs should have look at the replay to even see if it was close. I’m not sure if being snubbed is the right term in my case as I wasn’t even nominated nor do I really have any influence over Dynamics as a whole.
But every year when the results come out I think it would be so cool to see my name in lights. So in an effort to avenge the wrongly omitted and blatantly offended I’m making up my own famous people list.
There is no analytical merit to the people selected so if you feel like you belong on this list I think things can be arranged in exchanged for a little chocolate or underground dance videos of your favorite bloggers.
So without further ado here is Doug Pitcher’s 100, 50, 37 Most Famous, Awesome, and Totally Influential Dynamics People List for 2011. (Hey, creating a 100 person list is harder than it seems and I have to get back to some real work. How else am I going to become famous on a real top 100 list.)
- Doug Pitcher – It’s my dang list so I’m putting my name at the top
- Linda Rose – A pioneer and trend setter in the hosting world. One of the brightest, most forward thinking persons I’ve ever worked with.
- David Musgrave – Hosed out of being a top 100 most influential person on a slightly more formal list I’m giving you top billing here David.
- Mariano Gomez – Famous to the point I feel bad for even putting him #4. I’ll try to do better next year Mariano.
- Frank Hamelly – Another one who was wrongfully mistreated in the 100 most influential poll. Hope you consider this placement as consolation.
- Mark Polino – Mr. Cookbook himself. Anyone that can write an entertaining book about Dynamics must be doing something right. Mark lists off some missing people from the top 100 list. I wonder if I buy 50 cookbooks Mark would put me on the list.
- Leslie Vail – Keep putting secretly recorded dance moves out on YouTube and you’ll be on this list year after year.
- Victoria Yudin – Great blog that has SQL scripts galore on anything you need in Dynamics.
- Mohammad Daoud – Got to give some shout outs to my fellow blogging buddies. Not that Daoud needs any more credit as he’s on the list himself and graciously accepts his nomination.
- Christina Philips – Another Blogger extraordinaire.
- Kirill Tatarinov – OK, the head of MBS Dynamics should get some love.
- Terry Heley – Payroll guru at Microsoft that gives us all the inside scoop via an underground email system. She’d be even more famous I’m sure if she’d put her stuff out on a blog.
- Patrick Roth – Pretty smart cookie on the Developing for Dynamics blog. I always filter on the site for his articles as they are usually pretty good.
- Steve Chapman – YouTube video king. I love walking around with Steve as people ask for my autograph just because they think I must be famous if Steve will hang out with me.
- Rebecca Bunas – Even bigger rock star than Steve Chapman. I now refuse to walk any where with Rebecca as it usually turns into a two hour journey as we have to stop and talk to everyone she knows.
- Errol Schoenfish – I don’t know Errol personally but hear he’s a good guy. At least we all know where he lives and what his house looks like from Convergence in case you wanted to stalk him.
- Mark Rockwell – Who doesn’t like the crazy outfits and personalities of all the Rockton folk.
- Nick Hoban – Microsoft Dynamics Community guy. I asked if he could pull some strings and make me an MVP but he said I had to be more useful and not post so many silly blog articles. How am I doing Nick?
- Don Morton – Football coach, mentor and site leader over the Dynamics Academic Alliance (DYNAA)
- Bethany Eighmy – Part of the DYNAA team that brought myGPcloud to universities
- Lyndsey Creamer – the other part of the DYNAA team that brought myGPcloud to universities
- Jesse Byam – Canadian guy that walks around in shorts. If you don’t know Jesse you ain’t having any fun.
- Anya Ciecierski – I couldn’t spell her name so had to wait until I looked it up to put her on the list.
- Chris Dew – I’m most familiar with the back of Chris’s head as that’s all I usually see on our annual sunrise scramble foray at the Partner Event. eOne guy.
- Francisco Garcia Hillyer – Breaking into the top
100, 50,37 list for the first time is F.G.H. He’s been a Microsoft guy for many years and now is an active blogger. One of the smartest support person I know so am glad he’s there to bail me out from time to time. - Terry Carlton – I just like Terry so I’m putting him on the list.
- Donte Kim – Nodus founder
- Asher Mathew – Used to work for Nodus but I think has moved to Avalara. At least that’s what the 100 emails I got announcing the event said.
- Vaidy Mohan – Another blogging buddy.
- Cheryl Mortvedt – Fellow support person whom I usually team up with to beat up on unsuspecting Microsoft support people at the annual partner advantage meetings.
- John Stulak – Ethotech founder. Went to Costa Rico to bring sales commissions to the monkeys.
- Richard Whaley – That professor guy that has all those training books.
- Jennie Davis – The partner channel head hauncho
- Mike Feori – Famous tomato harvester and application consultant
- Liane McIlraith – If Liane doesn’t know it no one knows it. Every client I know loves Liane.
- Doug White – Grumpiest guy I know but one heck of a systems architect.
- Dwight Specht – Late entry. I met Dwight at a DYNAA event thing but didn’t really get to talk to him much. But love his style especially in his follow up to being included in the 100 list.
OK, so there you have it. I’m sure there are many deserving candidates but the vote was unanimous for the above on the first annual Pitcher Top 100 list.
Maybe next year I’ll actually get 100 people on the list. Ping me if you want to see your name on the above list and I’ll do a recount and adjust accordingly.
User Stories–Thinking outside the box
Hello all, a few days ago, I was helping my friend Doug Pitcher covering support while he
was spending the dollars, so I answered a call from one of our customers, she was not able to change her password used to access the server where Dynamics GP lives on her company.
It was a nice call so far, she was giving a thought on what her password should be and finally she says “I know which one I am going to use” and then I say “please do not use your home address” she replied with a laugh saying “how did you knew?” so I just said well it’s common on users to do that, then she kept thinking a bit more when I saw her enter her password, but again she was receiving errors, so I asked her “remember do not use a password that was previously used before, it should not contain parts of your name or last name it should include a Capital letter and at least one number” when I was frozen by the question “Should I enter uppercase or lowercase numbers?”.
What?…. wait a second did I heard it right? so I asked “can you repeat that?” and she said it again “uppercase or lowercase numbers?” at first I must say I was at the point to break in a laugh but I do respect our customers and try to understand them so for a few nanoseconds my mind went into a spiral when all of the sudden I had a revelation!!!!.
So I asked “Could you please tell me, are you using a laptop or a desktop?”
she replied “A desktop…” then my mind workflow was in the correct path then I asked
“How are your uppercase numbers organized"?” when she replied “They are above QWERTYUIOP” and then I asked “how are your lowercase numbers organized “ when she said “on the right part of my keyboard right next to the arrows….” so I said “use your lowercase numbers” after a few moments she replied “my lowercase numbers are not working…” this is an easy fix I said “press the Num Lock” on your lowercase number area and they will work”
Finally I was able to help her reset her password but I kept thinking on it as I have a laptop with regular keyboard not the extended version I saw that sometimes you have numbers on the letters M,J,K,L,U,I,O that are smaller than the key letter, so should that have been the case I know that I can find lowercase numbers on my laptop.
Now I have shared this true story behind the Customer Service Desk and I hope you like it, and I would like you to share one of your memories while working with users and Dynamics GP.
Have a great Day!!

Currency Translation Default Exchange Table IDs–Demystified!!!
A few days ago I was browsing GP when I noticed a section in GP that I was not familiar with. ![]()
I used to provide multicurrency support in LATAM as well for a company I sued to work but this time I was left with a question mark.
If you go to Tools > Setup > Financial > Multicurrency
you will see Multicurrency Setup window that now includes a section named “Currency Translation Default Exchange Table IDs”

I searched all over the internet and GP help files but with no luck, then I asked on Microsoft Communities when a friend from Fargo provided such information.
After installing GP 2010 SP1 you can translate GL amounts in a specified currency. Management Reportes can use translated amounts directly from Dynamics GP.
A currency translation allows you to report GL in different currencies that are not either the functional currency or the originating currency.
That’s why they (MS) added this table to setup exchange rate to be used for translation.
Translation Types:
Average uses a single exchange rate for each GL period, the values are converted to the reporting currency using an average exchange rate for the individual period as entered in the exchange table.
Current uses a single exchange rate based on the report date, the values are converted to the reporting currency using the exchange rate on the “as of date” for the report.
Historical uses a single exchange rate based on the transaction date, when an account is converted to the reporting currency individual transactions for the account are converted to the reporting currency using the exchange rate that was valid on the transaction date, then all summary information will be recreated for the account, based on the translated amounts.
In all three types if an exchange rate couldn’t be found then functional currency amounts are used.
There are more features that came along with this new characteristic, and obviously you need FP1 for Management Reporter.
Have a great day!!

Adoption of Business Intelligence is a Sales Issue, Not a Technology Issue
“I’m not getting the information I need.”
Hearing that, most people reach for a technology solution. And there’s a lot of good technology solutions to choose from; but which one?
That’s a trick question.
We’re jumping to the solution; not identifying the problem. Have you heard this before? Of course you’ve heard it; a thousand times.
But it is a recurring problem for solution providers. The CXO sees a beautiful looking dashboard advertised in some magazine, somewhere, and concludes that they need it; got to have it.
Here’s the problem. As it turns out, it is very unlikely that the CXO even knows what information they want on the dashboard. Even when probed, the CXO has only a vague idea of what they want.
Why is this a sales issue? Because a good sales process, properly executed, should bring this information to the forefront, or should sell a small engagement to specifically determine what information is needed, and what problems will be solved by having the information.
If the CXO buys the BI tool before they understand how they’re going to use it, they probably won’t realize the value of the investment. It’s a sales problem, not a technology problem.
